Start of our Road Trip - Port St. Lucie, Florida to Columbia, South Carolina - June 12

We left at 9:00 in sunny weather, but as we drove north, it rained on and off all day. At times, it was torrential. We stopped for lunch in Jacksonville around 12:30.

We continued north on I-95 over into Georgia and then into South Carolina. Rain, rain, and more rain! We were making decent time, despite the rain until we hit an area where it was stop and go for about 45 minutes. Must have been an accident, but it was cleared by the time we got up there.

We arrived in Columbia, SC and got checked into the Residence Inn around 7:00. Long day…..around 540 miles today.

This is just a one-night stay and tomorrow we will travel to Columbus, Ohio. It’s an older Residence Inn and kind of “yucky”. Room smelled of cigarette smoke and furnishings are a bit worn and smell of stale tobacco. Glad it was just one night.

We grabbed a late dinner and then settled in to watch the Stanley Cup Final. St. Louis won for the first time ever, so that was great. We were rooting for Boston though.

New House Progress & Road Trip Preparation

May 28 - June 11

Just got back from my “cleanup” post-surgery appointment. OUCH! I should have taken a photo of the “things” they pulled out of each nostril/sinus. I can now breath again with all of that out of there. It was downright unpleasant having it removed, but it had to be done. Now I have 2 weeks of twice a day antibiotic in saltwater sinus rinses to do. He wanted to have me come back in 2 weeks just to look at it and he was sure it would be fine, but I asked if that was mandatory since we were looking to get out of town and wouldn’t be back for several months. He said that was fine, since I could do the rinses wherever we are. So, we are aiming to leave Wed or Thursday at the latest. I am having my new glasses redone (bifocal wasn’t in a great spot) and will need to wait for them to come back.

 Last Sunday we drove by the house again and I’m going on and on about how close they are placing some plants to the driveway at the house across the street. I look up and Greg is patiently waiting for me to notice that our house has all the block walls up! Holy cow! We got out and walked around inside our “rooms”. The beginning roof framing pieces were laying there in front, so I imagine this Sunday they will be up. We watched them do the roofs on the homes that are done already, and it took lots of stages before it was finished. 

Greg is doing the routing for the trip. I gave him a list of potential things to do in each place and he’s been working out the best routing. We are eliminating New York City since there is so much to do there (and some require nicer clothing than we’ll be traveling with) and make it a separate trip on its own at another time. Monday, we’ll call the building supervisor and see if he can give us a ballpark guess of when our pre-drywall walkthrough will be and we will try to schedule how long the trip is around that. Then, see if he has a guestimate of how much longer it will be before it is finished. During that time, we can start the furniture ordering process and picking out lots of stuff. I found very cool accent chairs that I hope are still available when it’s time to buy. But, we don’t have enough room in storage to buy them now. They are at Bealls which is a Florida-style store, mainly clothes, but they do have a few household things as well. I looked on the manufacturers website and they don’t offer it, so maybe it was made just for Bealls. Yep, my head just exploded!  

Now, for the task of fitting everything we are traveling with into my one suitcase and a carryon size. We got a cooler which plugs into the “cigarette lighter” and is essentially a mini fridge. We also got a plug that can work in the hotel as well. We will travel with Nutrisystem to eat when we aren’t eating out. (just need a microwave)

Since I got the all-clear to travel, we leave tomorrow 6/12 for a road trip. We had thought we would have until Aug or Sep before we needed to be back for the pre-drywall walkthrough, but the construction supervisor says it should be 2^nd or 3^rd week of July. So, we revised the trip a bit to not go as far North on this leg and then when we strike out after the walk-through and when we need to be back about 6 weeks before move-in (don’t have that date yet) we will head up the east coast further north. So, we will remain flexible with the trip and cut it short should we need to.

So, we will have a couple of days of just driving to get north and then we will start doing some touring. Being flexible is much easier staying in hotels versus RVing since you can cut a stay short with no penalty in a hotel, where the RV parks are all paid in full up front and no refunds if you leave early or arrive later. Time will tell if we prefer car road trips vs RVing. I suspect we will still think we can’t beat a cruise for convenience. LOL (though, seeing most places in the States can’t be done that way)

I’m almost caught up adding photos to the blog from the web albums. What a pain. Despite me rearranging them when I got home, they are scrambled worse than ever making it really hard to add them. Plus, I think the blogsite is having issues because I keep getting error codes saying they can’t add the chosen photos, even one at a time. ARGH!!! I found a new program to renumber them so hopefully the process of adding them to Google Photos albums won’t screw them up. (for future…doesn’t help me with the ones already up there) I’m in the middle of Cape of Good Hope so that’s the start of the last segment so if I can get the site to work, I can finish before we leave next week. We’ll see how it works for the road trip and hopefully I won’t have to search for another program. I’m not finding a way to add a caption below the photos on this new program, which is crappy, so may need to find a new one anyway. I can add it online, but on the cruise, I’d prefer it to be done offline like I do now. It lets you add one, but it puts it right on the photo obliterating some of the photo. Not a fan!

Deviated Septum & Sinus Surgery

May 23

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum which is a displacement of the bone and cartilage that divides both nostrils. During septoplasty, the nasal septum is straightened and repositioned in the middle of your nose.

I had to be at the hospital at 9:30 for an 11:00 Outpatient surgery. I got checked in and then was called for registration. I already had 2 phone calls to pre-register the day before. The young man who was checking me in said “so you’re here for your pre-op physical?” I said “no, I already had that, I’m here for the surgery today.” He had me down for a couple of blood tests and an EKG. I said I already had a ton of blood tests, chest x-ray and an EKG. The other 2 blood tests I didn’t have nor where they ordered. He apologized and said he was pretty new. We got that straightened out and I waited to be called back. She called Ann Kanes. Hmmmm, I figured that was close enough to Annette Kanies. She introduced herself and so did I. ha ha. 

The nurse took me into a room and gave me instructions to get undressed and into my cute gown and the sexy socks. She said to crack the door open when I was done. Just as I had everything off and was bending over to pick up the gown, the door opens and it’s the doctor. So, there I am in just the sexy socks and showing him the full moon. He was so embarrassed and left and came back. When he returned, he said If it helps any “nice buns”. I told him “I’ll take it”. The nurse said he turned bright red. Being an ENT doc, I doubt he has much cause to see that end of a patient. 

Now, I’ve got on the hair net that completed my look and they did the obligatory several sticks in my arm to find a vein to put the IV. The nurse finally gave up and the nurse anesthetist said he would do it. After asking me the same questions on allergies, what surgery I was there for and what doctor was performing it, over and over, they finally started the sedation and they wheeled me off saying “let’s get this party started!” 

They had Greg go sit in the waiting room and said I’d be about 2 hours. I think I came to around 3:00 or so. They gave me a popsicle and some ice chips. The doctor had checked me out on the computer, but he must not have saved it and the staff couldn’t let me go until they got that straightened out. So, it was around 4:30 or so when they wheeled me out to the car. 

Then Greg went to Walgreens with me in the car to get my pain meds, anti-nausea pills, antibiotic and the prednisone. He was in there over an hour. Walgreens was refusing to fill the pain med since I am allergic to one of the components. I think the doctor figured the synthetic form would be OK. (codeine makes me break out in a rash and makes me want to scratch my skin off) Anyway, they finally filled it. Greg even said just give me the other 3 RXs and he’d come back for the other one when they got it figured out. Then, they said they had to talk to me. He explained I just had surgery and couldn’t come in. Then they said, then go through the drive-through and they can talk to me. I could barely talk with all the packing. She kept saying I can’t hear you. Greg kept repeating what I said to them. Sheesh! So, it’s after 6:00 when we got home.

I do itch a bit with the meds, but not bad and it’s tolerable. 

I have a “spreadsheet” of timing of all the meds both oral and things to go up my nose. 

The first day was the worst because of the packing in my sinuses. You have to breathe through your mouth and that made it hard to swallow pills or eat. When Greg changed my bandage, it wasn’t very bloody at all.

The doctor told Greg that because of how deviated my septum was it took a lot to correct it and it left a hook at the end of my nose. So, he had to fix that. My nose has always pointed to one side and it looks a bit different now. (so, a "nose job" of sorts) 

The day after surgery I went in to have the packing removed. Yay! I can breathe. That makes everything much easier. He did some clean-up and was concerned about a small area where it had a cut, but it wasn’t part of the surgery. He put some stuff on it and rebandaged my nose and sent me on my way. I go back in 2 weeks for more clean-up and he has already warned me to take a pain pill before the appointment. Gee, that sounds fun. 

I’m back to eating normally and I really don’t have much blood at all. I have just one more day of prednisone and a week or so of antibiotic. I’m using nasal saline at least once an hour and I finish the course of Afrin today. I also put antibiotic ointment up my nose along the septum as well. I have to sleep pretty much sitting up for a few more days and can’t bend over at the waist for another week or so. 

I have had no bruising and hardly any swelling. Pleasantly surprised with how well the recovery is going.

Hopefully, I will be cleared to travel soon so we can get the road trip started. That should be way more interesting than my constant postings on "I saw this doctor and then saw this dentist and then this doctor....." you get the drift....

May 7 - 22

Almost every day at least one of us has had a doctor or dentist appt. (mostly me) Working in as much as possible between travels. Eye exam and new glasses for me with some additional testing for early glaucoma in the right eye. Got my prep for the new bridge and I should get the permanent bridge in place the day before my deviated septum/sinus surgery. I also am having a lot of pain in my left wrist, which they think is just tendonitis. Not sure what could have set that off. (I'm right handed) So, I'm icing it and have a wrist brace. (and trying to stay off the computer, yeah right)

When I was shopping in Natal a lady who spoke no English handed me a note. Loosely translated it said "If love were enough in every prayer all of the ills of the world wound end. Happy Easter. God Bless You! In Portuguese…..

We got word that May 9^th they started our house. We are awaiting a call from the project manager to see if they have any projected dates. We drove over there to check it out and the neighborhood was an explosion of workers. It looked like an ant farm with all the workers & their equipment. (on the whole neighborhood) It was hard to drive down the streets. We said we’ll need to come back Sunday when they won’t be working to get photos of “our dirt”.

We drove through Del Webb which has been open quite a few more months and they just aren’t doing as well. It feels “cheaper” and while they had some occupied, just not as built up as our neighborhood. So, we feel we made the right choice for us. They had homes in various stages of construction, but no one was working there.

We went back on Sunday, so we could get some photos of the area without all the construction chaos. There are quite a few occupied homes in the front area that was started first. They have sold over 500 homes in 9 months.

There also are a pair of Wood Ducks that visit the pool here. Greg has seen then quite a few times actually in the pool. This is the male in full breeding colors.

We are trying to get a packing strategy planned for our road trip. Greg ordered a cooler that plugs into the car (and an adapter for it to plug in at hotels) and it fits on the floor in the back seat. Suitcases and duffels have been selected for “best fit”. We won’t need a lot of clothes, but we do need a few warm layers as well as summer clothes and birding clothes. 

I saw my ENT yesterday and he explained the surgery to me and probable recovery time. Right now, we figure at least 3 weeks before traveling. (after the surgery on the 23^rd) We’ll see how it goes. So, I’m trying to get my travel stuff together now since I’m sure I won’t want to be digging through storage after the surgery. I was hoping he would say it wasn’t necessary after my oral surgeon removed the offending tooth/root and suctioned out the sinus. He said he wanted to say I had 100% deviation (space to use to breathe), but it’s at least 90%. So, yes, I still need the surgery and I have to admit I feel like I’m getting “stuffed up” again. I feel lucky that I felt so good for the WC and having the oral surgeon do his part first was a good call.

Besides researching our road trip, we just booked our trip for 2020. We are doing the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express from Vladivostok to Moscow via Mongolia June 13. It’s 15 days and we will add a few extra days to explore Moscow after the train trip. We booked it with Michelle of Nature Expeditions International (NEI) We booked through them for the Amazon trip and the Antarctica trip on Quark. Whoo Hoo, Siberia & Outer Mongolia!

I’m still working on adding photos to the blog. I have got to find a better way to keep them in order after I get them all moved around where I want them. That is taking way too much time as I go. Not sure why Google has such a horrible system. Picasa worked very well, and they replaced it with something worse. (IMHO)

This Sunday we visited our lot again and they have poured the foundation. Today the construction 
supervisor called to introduce himself and exchange emails for future contact.
