Happy Thanksgiving!

Wednesday, November 22 we celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary. (plus 5 years together before that) We went to Roessler's Restaurant here in Sarasota. It was very good and they had a nice 3 course dinner menu. Our pics didn't come out well, it was a bit dark in there.

They had a really tasty chocolate mousse for dessert, thick & rich.
Here is our schedule for the 7 day Brilliance of the Seas cruise with Royal Caribbean:
23 Nov - Tampa - Happy Thanksgiving!
24 Nov - Key West
25 Nov - Sea Day
26 Nov - Roatan
27 Nov - Cozumel – Jennifer’s Birthday
28 Nov - Grand Cayman
29 Nov - Sea Day – Linda’s Birthday
30 Nov - Tampa
I don’t plan on posting while we are gone and will update the blog after we return. We look forward to seeing Jim & Jennifer from Panama again! We plan on snorkeling our brains out in 3 of the ports.
This RV Park has filled almost to capacity due to the holiday. The little houses have had "snowbirds" moving in for the season as well. They will spend the winter. I'm sure some of the RVs will too, but many are here just for Thanksgiving.
Karen, I thought of you today when an R-Pod pulled into the space next to us. Nice couple and it's their first trip in it.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone that celebrates the holiday!! If you're Canadian, just overeat and watch football. (OK, it can be hockey that's good too)
We area packed and ready to go!

Sun - n - Fun RV Resort - Sarasota, FL

Thursday, November 16 we made our way to Sun - n - Fun RV Resort in Sarasota. As we make our way past Plant City, where we have visited often for their Strawberry Festival (it’s the winter strawberry capital of the world). They bring in name entertainment and have all the usual carnival food, but of course the star is their strawberry shortcake. Fun entertainment like the cow costume contest. Owner and their cow dress in fun themes. Yep, it’s a fun time!
Then, we make our way past Tampa where we also have visited many times to visit Busch Gardens (used to be season ticket holders) for the animals and of course the roller coasters, we have been to several Tampa Bay Lightening hockey games and often come to celebrate a birthday or anniversary at Bern’s Steakhouse.

We arrived at Sun - n – Fun in the early afternoon and got escorted to our site. We are here for 3 weeks. I had hopes of ordering things and having them delivered here for our SA cruise, but getting the package from Zappos that arrived yesterday was painful. When we arrived here the UPS lady just happened to be delivering a package and she just handed it to us as we had just arrived and hadn’t even parked the RV yet. She said we had another one in the office that she delivered yesterday.

So, Greg goes to get the package and was told they NEVER accept mail at the office. It was probably in the mail room. OK, we don’t live here and have no idea where the mail room is. Greg asks and she says well, it’s not open now. It’s all locked up and we don’t have keys to it.

We check out the site map for this RV Park and find a mail room hoping they list some hours. It’s locked and nothing there. So, we go back to the office to ask where it is and what are the hours. It was moved temporarily due to Irma damage and she gives me the hours and they were open. (not locked up as they said before)

So, we set out to find it and eventually do. They were not forthcoming in telling us how to find it. It’s a huge room and I’m sure It’s run by volunteers that live here. (or possibly it’s a paid job) Anyway, they said no they don’t take UPS packages there. We see the box sitting on the shelf and they begrudgingly get it for us. Then, a lady comes by and really gets snippy saying the only reason it’s here is because the UPS lady forgot to take it back. They are supposed to only deliver to your site. (which wasn’t assigned when it was delivered and I’m sure she wouldn’t have left it at an empty site)

We haven’t encountered that anywhere else, no matter how large or small the park (or quality of park) they have all been gracious about package pick up and delivery. For those who full time it, it’s the easiest way to get something delivered. They normally have a room they keep mail in until you come to pick it up.

For a lot of reasons, we have already crossed this one off our list of places to stay. We expected to really like this place.

First of all, the roads in here are really narrow. So are the sites. It was the hardest space to get into that we have found to date. (and we’ve had a few tough ones) It barely fits in the narrow space (that isn’t all that long either). It’s geared towards families that vacation here. It has mostly these 500 sq ft “houses” that people can buy or rent. (they must have 90 consecutive days that they live somewhere else since that’s a law in the county or something) So, it’s a weird feel here with that. It’s a huge pool area with bar and snack bar, but you can’t bring your own soda or water to the pool area. There are tons of “fun” things to do that we just don’t value in a place to RV. They have a gym, but it’s $6.00 a day to use it. Normally, the point of a resort RV park is that they have these amenities and they are included. (hence, the higher cost to stay in one) Supposedly, the winter rate does let you use the gym at no cost. The sites are gravel not paved, which isn’t a deal breaker, but for resort prices you normally get a large paved space. This place is about $30 per night more than the last place we stayed with wide streets, huge parking space and nice amenities. If you had a family of kids and spent a couple weeks here in the summer, I’m sure it would be appealing to those folks. Though, there were a lot of retirees paying bocce ball & shuffleboard. The pool was packed. Cost aside, for half the price we wouldn’t care to stay here again. They just don’t make you feel welcome. They seem to be big on sales and not much in the way of being friendly and customer service. Maybe they are to their owners.

Up until this one, there aren’t any we wouldn’t stay in again. Of course, if this was all that was available we would stay here.

Saturday the 18th we drove to Port St. Lucie to get our cruise stuff from storage. Just over 2.5 hours each way.
Today, Sunday we walked around this huge place. All things considered it probably is a decent lifestyle for retirees for a low cost active retirement complex. (in the tiny houses) Great for snowbirds since they have to leave for 3 months anyway, so they just go home.

Withlacoochee State Forest - Brooksfield, FL - Croom Trail

Wednesday November 15th, we went back to the Croom Trail for one last shot at finding a Red Cockaded Woodpecker. (spoiler alert----we didn’t….)
We heard/saw very few birds this morning. We did find several Red-headed Woodpeckers, a Downy and a Red-bellied Woodpeckers.  There were a few Ruby-crowned Kinglets & Palm Warblers in small groups.

 Red-headed Woodpecker

we had to climb over this one
this one was easier to walk under....
Red-headed Woodpecker was in and out of a hole in the tree

We only spent a half day here so we could go to lunch and then back home to get ready to move to Sarasota tomorrow. (near Tampa)
I needed to change Primary Care physicians since the doctor I really did not like is no longer with the practice. The nurse I spoke to said she will not be missed. OUCH! I thought maybe it was just me that didn't gel with her, but it seems it was widespread. It worked out well as I was able to switch to a doctor located close to where we stay in Port St. Lucie instead of driving to Stuart on the coast. Fingers crossed I have a better experience with this one. Plus, I was able to get seen in early December instead of late Jan (we won't be there then anyway). Since it's my initial visit after starting Medicare it's good to establish with a new doctor.
I also had a package go missing that was supposed to arrive here on Monday. It was from Zappos and they canceled that order and placed another one to arrive today at the address where we will be in Sarasota. The first girl I talked to didn't really help much other than to say it would arrive yesterday. (it did not) She did give me $30 credit for my trouble. So, I had to call back and the guy that helped cancel and reorder was super. Their secure online credit card thing wasn't working and after numerous tries he said. Your shoes are free. (2 pair) They arrived today and the office in Sarasota said it was no problem to hold them until we arrive tomorrow. Did I mention 2 pairs of FREE shoes?!? Gotta love Zappos customer service!

Ferndale Preserve - Clermont, FL & Oakland Nature Preserve - Oakland, FL

The 192-acre Ferndale Preserve is located on the western shore of Lake Apopka.
Greg used to cycle in this area quite a bit when we lived in Oviedo. It's probably the most challenging area and was good to build endurance.

 Palm Warbler
 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher

 Common Ground Dove

After we finished the trails we stopped for lunch before heading to our next area.

The first place we tried was closed due to Irma damage.
trail was closed

The Green Mountain Scenic Byway is quite scenic. At the north end of the byway and just minutes from Orlando, Sugarloaf Mountain boasts some of the best views of the Lake Apopka region. Yes, there is a mountain in Florida! Sugarloaf Mountain is the highest point in peninsular Florida at 312 feet above sea level, and the stunning views are worth the trip. OK, so no one else would call it a mountain. However, when Greg was a serious cyclist he used to do laps up and down Sugarloaf which has a 13% - 15% grade (depending on the source). Since we were in the area Greg drove me up there to see where he used to cycle.
We headed to the South shore of Lake Apopka in hopes of our next spot would be open.
The Oakland Nature Preserves vision is to, “promote understanding of the fragile balances among land, water, mankind, and the environment by EDUCATING present and future generations about the natural systems of the Lake Apopka Basin and by RESTORING and CONSERVING the lands within the Preserve.” Its 128 acres consists of 90 acres of undisturbed forest wetlands while 38 acres are being restored to a longleaf pine-turkey oak plant community. The Oakland Nature Preserve is managed and restored by volunteers. It’s the perfect setting to view the flora and fauna of this region.

One of the trails was closed, but we did find one that was open.

Despite some pretty meager birding opportunities, we did see 1 new bird to add to our "Life List". We are over a thousand now.
We normally move locations on Wednesday, but we added an extra day here since we already had the next stop booked months ago. (we normally just do it ahead just before, but since we leave on a cruise from Tampa, we wanted to make sure we had a place close by).
Tomorrow, we will bird in the morning and then come back and prepare to leave on Thursday.
