January30 2013 Sea Day

Another sunny & beautiful sea day.

Today we had the “pub lunch” that Princess has on some sea days. It’s British fare such as Bangers and Mash, Fish & Chips, Ploughman;s lunch or Cottage pie. It’s in addition to the other dining options at no extra charge.
Just a lazy day by the pool. Tonight the show is Tom Briscoe a stand-up comedy act.
Forgot to mention that last night before dinner was the Meet the Captain Party. Free drinks and meeting the cruise officers. The captain for this voyage is Andrea Poggi.
Early to bed tonight as we meet for our tour tomorrow at 7:00A.M
Our first time to Limon we did a one hour tour of the Tortuguero Canal and the Rain Forest Aerial tram.. We saw little wildlife on either on that trip, though both were very enjoyable and the view from above the rain forest was amazing!
So, this time wanted to do something different and spend a longer time on the Canal. I set up a private tour with a local guide name Jorge Morales. (jorgel.cr@hotmail.com)
Here is a description of what we are doing tomorrow:
Jaguar Rescue Center, 3 hours.
Tortuguero Canal,  2 hours
Bonita beach stop for lunch 2 hours.
The best view of the city and small city tour 1 hour

The Jaguar Animal Rescue Center in Playa Chiquita is a center to rehabilitate mistreated, injured and/or confiscated animals, which are then reintroduced to their natural habitat in protected areas.
During your visit you will have direct contact with monkeys, wild cats, sloths, raccoons, anteaters, marsupials, reptiles, amphibians, etc. You can also observe most of the venomous snakes of Costa Rica which are housed in terrariums imitating their natural habitat.
The Tortugeuro canals are the Caribbeans version of the Amazon. They are an extensive system of natural and man-made waterways used both for simple transportation and jungle exploration. Traveling through the canals is a fascinating experience rich in wildlife that includes monkeys, iguanas, and colorful tropical birds.

January 29, 2013 Sea Day

Last night the evening show was Ryan Ahern a world champion pianist. Very good show!

Today was another great sea day. We did get a brief shower of rain in the morning, but the afternoon was quite nice to lay by the pool.
Had lunch in the dining room and shared a table with some interesting people.
Tonight was our first formal night. Had a wonderful dinner and the show was Kenny James who was a 13 time Star Search winner and grand champion male vocalist. Very entertaining with his high energy and wide selection of music.

Earlier in the day we went to a lecture given by the niece of Al Capone. While many seemed to enjoy it, we thought it was a bit non informative and boring. Of course she was promoting the book she wrote on “Uncle Al Capone”.
We have one more sea day before we make port in Limon. Marianne and I scheduled a meeting for people on our tours for the first segment tomorrow morning at 10:00.
Many people wonder what there is to do on sea days. Well, I guess that is up to each individual. There is always something going on from lectures, arts & crafts, Trivia contests, Food and beverage presentations, fitness programs, Bingo, the casino, etc. OR you can sit on your balcony and watch the ocean, read (I loaded a Kindle with lots of books), go to the pool, hot tubs, or whatever you want to do with your day. (as little or as much as you would like.)
Tonight we get our first extra hour of sleep as we set the clock back an hour. Whoo Hoo!

January 28, 2013 Sea Day

Hi everyone!

We set sail yesterday a couple hours late from Ft Lauderdale. They were still loading a lot of stuff well past when we were to have sailed.
The Pacific Princess is a beautiful small ship. Walking around it seemed like we had stepped back in time. We enjoyed the Welcome Aboard buffet and explored the ship.

We had our customary Mudslide and toasted to being “homeless” as we were waiting to sail away.
We have early seating for dinner (6:00) as there is no open seating dining on this ship. Prior to boarding I made arrangements to have 5 of us CC members seated at the same table. (Rick & Janie and Marianne) Worked well for 4 of us, but the 5th was at another table. She is trying to get that worked out. We are also sharing the table with 2 other people that are only doing the 1st segment of the cruise and a single lady who is doing the full world cruise. Had a great Welcome Aboard Show in the show lounge.
This is the first of 3 sea days in a row before we make port in Limon, Costa Rica. We had the first Meet & Greet for all the CC members of our roll call this morning. It was nice to meet many of the people that have been on the boards discussing the cruise and many are sharing tours that I set up. Marianne set that up and had name tags for everyone.
Had a nice lunch in the dining room after the Meet & Greet with Rick & Janie. We are sharing a lot of tours as well as being tablemates at dinner. Wonderful couple and we are happy to have their company. Marianne is a joy as well and looking forward to sharing experiences as we go around the globe.
We got a bit of sun today. It was sunny and hot!
Now to get ready for dinner and the evening entertainment!

Ship Info

The Pacific Princess was acquired from now defunct Renaissance Cruises in 2002. When Renaissance Cruises went bankrupt, Princess bought 3 of their ships. One was renamed Pacific Princess (replacing the original Love Boat).

These ships are the smallest in the Princess fleet. There are pros and cons to small ships. The size affords access into some smaller ports without the use of a tender. There are less options for dining. It is not set up to have flexible dining, so there are 2 fixed time seatings for dinner.

She has 2 alternative restaurants The Sterling Steakhouse and Sabatini's. (both are very good) The main dining room is The Club Restaurant. There is also the Panorama Buffet, outdoor grill and pizza.

For entertainment, there is the Cabaret lounge which features 2 shows times a night with the ship's singers and dancers, comedians, solo singers, performers, illusionists etc. There is a casino and various other lounges.  There is a library, fitness center, spa, internet cafe, a pool and hot tubs.
