Instead of taking our time looking for birds we headed
straight to where the Quetzal nest was and were disappointed we didn’t see
them. We discussed moving on or should we hang and wait and we decided to hangout
and wait to see if they were in the nest. We walked back and still nothing when
all of a sudden we saw 4 tail feathers coming out from the hole. So, we waited
about 15 or 20 minutes to see if he would come out. We waited back where he
couldn’t see us and eventually out pops his head with his tail feathers still
sticking out over his head. After a while he flew out and up into a tree. We
think we saw the female a little earlier on the trail. (though it could have been
any female) After our Quetzal encounter we proceeded to hike to the end of the
trail where the waterfall is/was. Since it is the dry season, it was pretty
much non-existent. Ah well, we slowly birded our way back to the car. The packed breakfast is huge. We had 2 huge muffins, bananas, juices and
trail bars. We only ate the muffins and carried the rest with us to have for
snacks/lunch along with some bars & cookies that we brought.

Since we didn't need lunch we stopped at Fresas Café (fresa is Spanish for Strawberry). Cute place and her batidos were fantastic as were the dish of strawberries with chocolate sauce and the strawberry empanadas.
It was a beautiful sunny day so we went for another drive to
get some photos of the town and we came across a funeral procession. They were
walking in the street carrying a cross and so traffic was stopped for quite a
long time.
dead snake in the road
We got some pictures of the bohio at the hotel. They have a few very nice ceremonial masks displayed at the bar.
Tomorrow we are to meet Rolando at 7:30 for our last day of
birding. Our packed breakfast didn't come, so we stopped at the market to get some fruit for breakfast.
Could the funeral procession be related to Good Friday? Just a thought.
