We didn’t have much of a choice on what time to start our
drive to Volcan since our water allotment is between 6:00 to 7:00 in the
morning. So after a quick shower and some breakfast we were on the road. It’s
normally around a 6 hour drive, but the Interamericana Highway has been under
construction for ages. Actually, when it gets finished it will be great. So,
with a lunch stop it took about 8 hours. There really was only a small section
where we had bad road and had to stop for flagmen.
It’s not often I’m up to see the sunrise so it was a treat
to wake up to this from our condo:
We stopped in Las Lajas to have lunch. We had stopped at Naturalmente Pizza y Restaurante Mediterraneo that was rated well, but we found out they were only open for
dinner. They directed us to a local fonda, so it was typical Panamanian food
and some of the toughest chicken we have had since we have been here. Normally,
the chicken is quite yummy here.
We finally made it to David (pronounced Dah-veed) and we
noticed there was a lot of new growth since we were there 6 years ago. We found
the turn off to Volcan and then checked into the Hotel Casa Grande Bambito which
is situated in Cerro Punta. It was in a lovely setting and we found the room to
be quite roomy and comfortable. Check out the huge bath tub (which we didn’t
use):

We had planned to go find a restaurant in town to have
dinner, but I suggested just eating at the hotel since Greg had been driving
all day. We walked around the grounds and spotted a lot of pretty birds as well
as the resident ducks and geese. Dinner was lackluster. I ordered nachos that were
really more chips and dips. It was tasty, just odd presentation. Breakfast was
included and it actually was quite good with a choice of cereal or fruit and
then choice of omelets, eggs any style & meats & toast.
We are excited for our first hike tomorrow!
