Canopy Tower Birding Tour - Days 3 & 4

July 13 Semaphore Hill & Plantation Trail

Domi was our guide again and we met up on the observation level at 6:00. Jenn came up too and we had some great sightings. The family and John went on an all day tour to an island where the Smithsonian does a lot of research. So, we had the guide all to ourselves.

Domi knew that we wanted to see Night Monkeys and we did a short drive down Semaphore hill and he found the tree that he knew they lived and went down the hill to see if they were “home” before we hiked down to see them. They were soooo cute! We also saw a Coati and a few birds.

On weekends the cyclists would take over the trail so they were banned and allowed only access to Plantation Trail.
Then, we hiked a while on Plantation Trail. We completed a “BINGO” of Trogons (seeing all 5 that can be seen in this area) We felt bad because the only one we didn’t see the day before was the one that John needed for his “list”. That night at dinner he told us that he didn’t care for the day tour and wished he had come birding with us instead. The family seemed to enjoy the tour though.

We came back for lunch and there was a huge troupe of Howlers that were so close that we thought they might come in the dining room with us. On the break between tours I was out in the hanging chair on the balcony and was watching them play. One of the little ones looked like he wanted to join me in the chair.

After the break we went to the Discovery Center and hiked around a bit and then climbed the tower. (Scott & Sonya will remember the tower) It started to pour rain. Really hard! So, we had to wait out the rain. Finally, it quit and we went to the top of the tower and birds were getting out and about and finally….we saw a Blue Cotinga. I saw a blue bird that I figured was a Dacnis and I showed Domi and I said it’s probably a Blue Dacnis, but tell me it’s a Blue Cotinga. Sure enough it was! He was kinda far away, but I got great views in the binoculars. We saw at least 3 or 4 in the area.

That night we had a night drive and all 6 of us went. From the dining room we spotted an Owl and then went downstairs to get a better look at it. We did see a Common Potoo and a Greater Potoo. We also saw a black & white porcupine and a different gecko.

Domi was our guide again and we went to Metropolitano Park in the city. We again were by ourselves, since the family had a different tour and John had left. Great sightings there!

In the afternoon we went to the ammo dump ponds and then for a short walk on the road to Pipeline. We saw another Blue Cotinga! We also saw a Crake and a Bittern. They are often heard but not seen. It was very special to get to see them amongst the thick reeds in the pond.

We thought we saw an Olingo, but it turned out it was a Wooly Opossum. It was right outside of the window at dinner. We had an earlier start tomorrow for a full day trip to Cerro Azul, so it was an early night for us.
