Ushuaia, Argentina - Day 2 - city tour

December 18

Today we did yesterday’s plan of just knocking around town. We slept in and had breakfast and then caught the HOHO around town. Not really a hop - on hop off, but it was a nice orientation of the town. The owner Luis Votto brought the Routemaster from England and remodeled it in Buenos Aires under his design and supervision. Since 1999 he has been doing the bus service with his wife Monica as a guide. It's about a 1 hour trip and you can return to where you started or get off at the Maratime Museum which is housed in the old prison.

So, we got off and toured the museum. The place was pretty huge and we soon realized we needed a lunch break. Our tickets were good for 48 hours, so we left and went in search of a restaurant that Pablo recommended named Chiko. It was closed for remodeling, so we went to a pizza place which turned out to be a good choice. Then we went back and finished the museum.

We had a briefing at our hotel by Quark on our expedition around 6:30. The process of where and when to place our luggage that needed to be transferred to the ship and where our carry on could be stored until our transfer to the ship was explained and a few other details taken care of. We also got a first look at our fellow passengers for the next 3 weeks.
After the briefing we were in need of dinner. The town is also known for their King Crab so we again asked at the front desk where they would recommend and it was the same name as the one Pablo recommended. Turns out there was a second location very close to our hotel, so we went and had a really good dinner. Greg had Chilean King Crab in a traditional in chili and brandy. I had a Sucking King Crab dish sautéed in olive oil with green onions, onions in a white sauce and gratin in the oven. Both were quite tasty!

Since we didn't get to do the train and the other trail we decided to take the shuttle back to Tierra del Fuego in the morning. So, off to bed we go.....
