Looking back at our RV experience

I think we both agree we are glad we did it. The lifestyle didn’t suit us as well as we expected, but it was a great experience and we enjoyed seeing so much in the many states in the year and a half we did it. We feel we chose the right size to full time in. It was nice having a washer & dryer and a dishwasher. While we know all RVs have things go wonky, I think we had more than our fair share. LOL.

I think every state has something of interest and something special. We visited 25 states and saw prairie, mountains, fields of all kinds of crops, bales of hay, bison, deer, prairie dogs, moose, elk and more. From small towns to cities. We enjoyed the local food in each and every one of them. Nashville Hot Chicken, Mac & Cheese topped with all kinds of things in Wisconsin, Southern Comfort Food, BBQ in all styles and the list goes on.

We also experienced the museums, caught some entertainment and took a couple of paddle boat rides as well as National & State Parks and just hiking and birding in nature. From the “must see” sites and the little-known quirky things, like corn museums, smallest church to the largest Angel Oak tree. Many scenic byways and oddities along the way such as large metal sculptures or the Jolly Green Giant & Sprout. There is also lots of history along the way visiting Capitol buildings, battle sites & exploring the Freedom Trail. Of course we found lots of new birds for our “life list”.

There was also the “challenge” of shopping in different grocery stores, listening to the political ads in every state and the “interesting” morning TV news anchors. Internet and phone issues in areas that had little or no coverage was the hardest to deal with when doing it full time. If you are just on vacation for a short period it wouldn’t matter as much, but doing it full time we do need/want those things.

We also found it interesting that most all of the RV parks had very different personalities with some living full time there with lots of kids and dogs in a small trailer to some very fancy resort style ones. All with very different rules and regulations.

Weird things like the various road kills along the way. There was one state that we had never seen so many dead deer in a day. All the usual stuff as well, the occasional skunk, lots of possums, armadillos, dogs, cats, squirrels etc.

We don’t count states we haven’t been to together, so we have a few more to do “road trips” to visit. We need to visit Oregon and Idaho out west. On the east coast we need to visit Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Michigan and Ohio. Then, we will have been to all 50 states. Of course, there are things we want to visit in some of the states we have already been to, so we will work those in as well.

So, with that chapter of our life coming to an end we look forward to our next “adventures”.

After the World Cruise in January when we get back at the end of April we will plan to fly out west and rent a car to tour there, then come back and we will buy a car and drive to the east coast states. If we still have time to kill before the new house is built we may take some “cheapo” cruises since we would be paying to stay in a hotel anyway, it may be cheaper to do that and more fun. Once we get a better time line for the new house that will help us plan our time between the WC and moving into the house.
Without touring almost every day now, I won't post as often, but still will post as we do have a lot of things to get done before we leave. Lots of house decisions with upgrades and still dealing with medical.
'Till next time.....

Motor Coach Resort - Port St. Lucie, Florida

October 15

We made our last drive in the coach to Port St. Lucie. We had great weather for the drive! We are back at the Motor Coach Resort. It’s a Class A only park with nice facilities. (also the most expensive park)
Wow, we feel like this place is a ghost town. It’s more of a winter visitor park and this is the emptiest we have experienced here. They were building some “coach houses” which are small buildings next to where you park your coach and they seem quite roomy. Doesn’t look like they have made much progress in the 5 months or so that we were gone. We got the same space since we like the view of the lake and it’s a pull in and not a back in.

pickleball courts - they also have tennis courts and other activities

besides the main pool there are 2 small pools next to the laundry rooms on the other side of the park

this new section will have it's own smaller pool and laundry room

We went to take some things to our storage unit and the first thing we noticed was that all of the RVs and Boats there were gone. That whole area was empty. We were on the list if a site ever opened up, but when we inquired they said they were turning the area into more regular storage. (it generates more revenue) Not sure how much notice those people got to find new places to store their RVs or boats. Of course we no longer need a place to park this beast when we travel.
We have a lot of work ahead of us to make room in storage for everything in the coach after we sell it and of course a few things will be put back into the coach when it sells. After lunch we went to see the new models at Valencia Cay at Riverland. The models opened while we were on the road and we even talked about maybe we should fly back for the grand opening event they were having. We decided against it since Del Webb hadn’t sold very many and we doubted they would either. We got the email after the event saying how successful it was and we both kinda went “yeah sure”.
Well, the sales office was booming. Lots of people looking and many people working there. Del Webb has 1 sales person and we only saw 1 or 2 people even looking at their models. We toured the homes at Valencia Cay and found one we really liked. It was so busy we couldn’t even talk to a sales person. We checked out their site locations and all of the sites open for sale were SOLD except for 3 spots. (in the area with the model we wanted) The other areas were pretty sold out as well. Even though we didn’t talk to a sales agent we overheard one telling a couple it was a year or more until a home could be completed. When we left in the coach for the summer Del Webb said it would be 6 months. So, we figured we could work that around our cruise schedule and that would be great.
However for Valencia Cay, we knew we needed to act fast to get one started asap and get one of the last 3 spots. New areas will open, but that would take even longer. They sold so many that they can only close so many each week (don’t know why). So, we left and said tomorrow we will go look at Del Webb again and then make a decision and if we chose Valencia Cay (GL Homes) we would give them the earnest money to hold it for 3 days for us to decide. The biggest issue is that we will have time to kill before we can move in after we get back from the World Cruise at the end of April. Since we will be staying in a hotel anyway, we figured we might as well travel. We will fly out west to visit the places we didn’t get to this year and then after we return home we will buy a car and drive to the states on the East coast area that we haven’t been to. Or we could move up some other travel plans we have. Lots of time to figure that out. (we will sell the car later in the year before the cruise)
October 17
I had my doctor appointment and was referred to an ENT (scheduled for tomorrow) and a Vascular doc that I still need to schedule. I had sinus x-rays today, so time will tell what the heck is going on.
After that we went to Del Webb and none of the spec homes or supposedly bought homes were completed and they were supposed to be the quick move-ins that should have been occupied. We looked at the one we liked there and while we would be quite happy with the plan, the neighborhood just isn’t as nice and the planned amenities are not as nice as well. The fact that in 2 months the Valencia Cay place sold so many already and Del Webb hasn’t; and they have been open way longer concerns us. Their sales/office staff also were not that helpful. High pressure, but not helpful. Valencia was no pressure and very helpful.
Neither place has any amenities built yet, but Valencia has way nicer plans and gave us a timeline of when each should be done based on number of homes sold.
So, we left there and went to Valencia Cay and looked at the model we liked the most again and also the model that had the most “standard features” to see what’s really included instead of all the designer stuff they use to make the models really beautiful. They offer a lot of really good standard features. We had a semi-custom home before and they offered less in their designer room.
We talked to the sales person and he went over everything and we explained our time constraints and he took us into the design room to show us possible upgrades so we had some idea of what we might consider. We chose the lot and paid the money that gives us 3 days to sign or not. We have until late Saturday afternoon to make our decision. We got copies of the contract and all the rules/regulations etc.
October 18
Today I had my ENT appointment. The doc was really nice and spent a lot of time talking about my past medical history before he examined me. He ordered a CT of my sinuses, but he really doesn’t think the problem is chronic sinusitis. I had suspected “yeast” infection and he agreed that with all the antibiotics I have been on (bronchial/sinus infection, pneumonia and more when they treated for a sinus infection that wasn’t a sinus infection.) So, he gave me prednisone, an antifungal pill and a nasal wash with a couple of additives. Plus, one side of my nose I have to put Eucerin cream in that side. So, hopefully this will work. There is a possibility that I may need surgery. (slight deviated septum might be causing the problem) So, I am waiting for the CT to be scheduled by my primary doctor. Time will tell if this works. I sure hope so, I am sooooo over this snarfing, nose blowing and not breathing. Oh, and I will miss the horrendous smell in my nose.
October 19
Today, we worked on selling the coach. They are eager to buy it and not at a bad price. We had hoped to stay here until the middle of November since we are paid up here, but they offered more money if they could have it by the end of the month. (lots of RV shows this time of year) So, we are now rushing to get things organized in storage and moving things out of the coach. Plus, we worked on extending our stay at the Residence Inn. Should have been an easy thing, but it ended up taking a couple of hours. Seriously?
We also went back and took photos of the house and of certain features in the other models for consideration. Here is the link to their website for better photos.

We like the Heron model. A bit larger than we wanted, but the layout was the best for us. Still a small home.

So, they come and pick up the coach on Oct 30 and we check into the Residence Inn on the 28th. That way we have some overlap for moving things into the hotel. It's a larger corner unit and will give us room to spread out and get ready for the World Cruise.
October 20
We had an appt at 4:30 to sign the papers on the house. Afterwards we celebrated by going out for steak. Holy crap, we just bought a house! Or at least have a contract to have one built.
Well, that's about all that's been going on in our mere 4 days here. We're such slackers...LOL

St Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum & Greek Festival - St. Augustine, FL

October 14

The Lighthouse is across the bridge on Anastasia Island. It turned out to be more than just climbing the lighthouse as it had several buildings with small museums which were interesting. They also had some short walking trails. We walked the short trails and toured all of the buildings before climbing the stairs in the lighthouse.

Their was a cute story on one level of the lighthouse showing what the son of the lightkeeper did with his sister's cat. He found out cats can float when he attached the cat to a parachute and dropped him from the top of the lighthouse. The cat survived. His sister didn’t learn of this until they were older adults.Probably a smart decision or she may have attached a small parachute to her brother and dropped HIM off of the top…..

The Greek Festival turned out to be quite small, but the food and music were really good. We stood in the long lines to get food and then had them under the tent watching the dancing and listening to the Greek music. Greg got the combo platter of Pastitsio, Dolomathes, Spanakopita, Greek salad, rice and pita bread and I had a gyro. We grabbed a couple of baklava for dessert and then walked around the tents selling things. Oddly, someone was there selling stock market advice. YIKES!
Since there really wasn’t very much to see there, we got some 2 baklava and a Diples to take home. I forgot to take a photo of the yummy desserts before we chowed them down.

We headed home to prepare for our last destination on this journey. We are just over 200 miles away from PSL, so, we are on our last leg of this journey.
