February 6, 2013 Lima, Peru 2:00 P.M. - overnight

Port of Callao (pronounced cah-yow)

Since we didn’t arrive until afternoon, we had time to read and relax. Saw lots more dolphins. Others sighted whales, but we did not see them this time.
Interesting note: Lima “stinks”. As in smells like dead fish. There is a fish drying factory that really makes parts of the city fragrant when the winds are in the right (or wrong) direction. We noticed it last time when we left the airport and this time from the ship in port. Not all day or everywhere, but strong in a few places.
Since we have already done the city tour here and taken in the wonderful Junius Folkloric Show with dinner, we were looking for something else to do here.
We arrived at 2:00 today and caught a ride in with Marianne’s group that was doing the city tour with Monica’s Tours.
She dropped us off at Mercado Indio (Indian craft market) in the Miraflores district where we wandered around for a while and then caught a cab to the Larco Herrera Museum. We nicknamed the cab experience “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride”. The museum is housed in a Vice Royal Mansion built on top of an archeological pyramid in a beautiful setting with tons of flowers. It houses the largest gold, silver and jewelry collection of ancient Peru. Very interesting collection of erotic pottery. We didn’t have time for dinner on this trip but last time we sampled some of the more “interesting” dishes such as Alpaca, cuy (guinea pig), cow’s hoove stew, and other local yummies.)

We had a refreshing soda at their outdoor café with an attentive waiter that as we would set down the glass he would pour in more from our bottle. Very serene setting. After we had toured we went across the street to a neighborhood park and waited for Monica to pick us up to take us to Lima Parque de la Reserva for their Magic Water Circuit, the greatest complex of fountains in the world, certified by Guinness World Record. We met up with Marianne’s group and watched a wonderful show of water, lights, music and images, in a circuit that includes 13 water fountains, each with a unique charm. One was a tunnel that you could walk through. You could walk through without getting wet, but the kids like to put their hands in it and water sprays everywhere.

Then we went back to the ship and grabbed some pizza and dessert before heading to the evening’s show. A local group called Inkamerica came on board and performed music and dance from various regions of Peru. High energy and colorful authentic dress. Then it was late to bed for an early morning wakeup call at 5:15 A.M. to meet Monica for our tour today at 7:30.

We had beautiful weather today and it was a good day despite it starting out with some drama. We had told the group to meet extra early since we had not been in the port area before and it was required to use a ship’s shuttle to get out of the port and we weren’t sure how long the process would take. 2 ladies got antsy that we had waited so long and left us and grabbed a cab. The tour operator was not late, we were early, but……
