Montevideo, Uruguay

Thursday February 15

We joined a tour that another CC member, Cheryl set up. City Tour & Home BBQ https://www.tourguideushuaia.net/montevideo-tour-guide

There were 16 of us on the tour in a mini bus. Very slow getting on & off the vehicle at each stop.
We visited the historic old City with Constitution Square and its special antiques free market, the Cathedral (main catholic church from 1790); Solis Theater, stopped at several beaches and viewpoints, and visited Stagecoach and Charruas indians bronze monuments; the Batle´s Park with the first Soccer World Cup Stadium where Uruguay won the soccer world cup in 1930; la Carreta bronze monument; all the Rambla (seaside avenue) with Pocitos Beach (considered the small Southern Copacabana) and it´s residential area; Punta Carretas area; Ramirez Beach.

After the City Tour we went to the guide's house (Hebert Sismondi of sismonditours.com)  for a "home made barbecued lunch" roasted with natural wood. We arrived to their home in the city and it looked like we were going into a small house, but it just kept wandering and twisting and turning until we got to their lovely courtyard. The whole family serves the food and everyone was just so nice and wonderful. Lots of food and wine.

We were served family-style a huge platter of typical Uruguayan food: sausages (chorizos), beef, chicken, barbecued sweet red peppers, sweet potatoes and onions, vegetable salad, tannat and cabernet suavignon Uruguayan wines, mineral water and vanilla-chocolate ice cream covered with Uruguayan carmel (dulce de leche).

Honestly, the food was all quite mediocre. It was a nice setting in his courtyard, but the beef was tough, the chicken dry and the corn on the cob cooked to death. The sausage was very good and the ice cream was very good for dessert. We wouldn't recommend the tour and wished we had taken one of the tours that went out of the city. However, we did want to see the city and had high hopes for a tasty lunch. It was a nice ambiance and nice to sit and have a meal with friends in a lovely setting, but just not good food.

We had a couple of hours to wander about the small area with a market at the end of the day after we were dropped back off at the ship.

 Sure, that's totally me!

Back on board we had a nice sail away after dinner and then we went to the show which was David Mendelsohn doing an all Beatles show this time.

Tomorrow, we visit Buenos Aires, Argentina

  1. We have a similar tour, just another company, hope ours works out a bit better.

  2. That's too bad...we were thinking about this tour. Karen and Steve, when is your tour and what company is it with?
