New Orleans, Louisiana - Day 2

Sept 24

We had a late start since we stopped to pickup a new hub cap at Freightliner.
We grabbed the HOHO bus and rode it until we came to the stop for the walking tour of the Lafayette Cemetery which was self-guided.

 Ogden Museum of Southern Art

 The Cat Practice Veterinary Hospital

We always love the above ground cemeteries. Lafayette Cemetery holds about 1,100 family tombs and more than 7,000 people despite it's small size.
The stop closest to the cemetery was under construction so we walked several blocks to get there

 Lafayette Cemetery No 1

Ferguson Tomb - resting place of 3 young children

wall vaults go all around the cemetery forming the walls

Jefferson Fire Company NO 22 - society tombs

 two oldest tombs

Society for the relief of destitute boys - Society Tombs

 Sexton's Cottage

The Secret Garden - 4 wealthy philanthropists who formed a society known as "Quarto"

Our plan was to eat Po’Boys at Johnny’s and then go to Brennans for Bananas Foster. However, we were still at the cemetery at noon so we decided to eat at Commander’s Palace since they also serve Bananas Foster. However, we were dressed as tourists. (shorts/capris & casual shirts) We were denied entry. No shorts allowed even at lunch. It was humorus when we walked in and the staff was lined up to greet and seat customers when they walked in, you could see the “horror” in their eyes as we walked in and the maitre’d stepped out from behind the podium to whisper to us that we weren’t dressed properly when I saved him the trouble and quietly said “no shorts?” he nodded. Other than being really hungry, I didn’t care.

lots of people begging for money in the French Quarter

So, we walked back to the HOHO stop and by the time we got to the French Quarter it was almost 2:00. Just as we got off the bus, it started to rain. So, we ducked under an awning to wait for it to stop pouring. It slowed and we walked the rest of the way to Johnny’s. It did stop while we were there.

 Muffuletta

My shrimp Po’boy was just OK. Good, but I have had shrimp in a tastier batter. (the one in Memphis was killer) However, it was the best remoulade sauce I have ever had. Greg got the Muffuletta which was the best one either of us have ever eaten. Very flavorful. Great meats & melty cheese with an olive salad mixture that was awesome. We have had some pretty boring ones in the past.

The restaurant was founded in Louisiana by former LSU basketball walk-ons Brandon Landry and Jack Warner, along with former Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees

From there we went to the Mardi Gras Museum and decided against the tour that takes an hour or more in favor of going back to the French Quarter for a sweet snack.

where we got the yummy praline shoe soles

We opted for praline shoe soles again since they are amazing. We got a brownie to take home for dessert later that night.

Tomorrow, we have a 3rd day in New Orleans. The HOHO has 1 day and 3 day passes. Only $10 difference in price and the 3 day included the free walking tours. It's consecutive so we had to go back again, though it would have been nice to have a day off and go back on another day.
