St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge - St. Marks, FL

June 4

We had hoped to find our elusive Red-cockaded Woodpecker and despite seeing 3 other kinds (Pileated, Red-bellied and Downy) we didn’t find one. It was a pretty drive past pine forests, marshes and finally a lighthouse at the end. There were several places to stop and take short hikes.

 Visitor's Center

 Yellow-throated Warbler

 Barn Swallow

 Red-winged Blackbird

 Red-bellied Woodpecker

Swamp Rabbit (they really are a different breed of rabbit)

 Common Gallinule
 Purple Gallinule

Downy Woodpecker (parent & young one)

 Scaub
 St. Marks Lighthouse

very small young gator crossed in front of us
we saw 2 raccoons out today

We had a late lunch at a restaurant that was just ok. I had the popcorn shrimp basket and Greg had the grouper basket. It was “good”, but no seasoning in the batter. We were out there with limited to no cell service and there really wasn’t much close to where we were, so it was worth a try.

The Seinyard

Tomorrow we are visiting the old and new State Capitol buildings and a Botanical Garden.
