Dry Run Creek Trail & Dakota Discovery Museum – Mitchell, South Dakota

August 23

Before lunch we went for a walk on the Dry Run Creek Trail. We didn’t see any birds, but it was a cool & breezy walk. The day got windier as the day went on.

The number 1 restaurant in town is El Columpio Mexican restaurant. While not bad food, it was rather bland.

After lunch we went to visit the Dakota Discovery Museum, but it was closed until 2:00 due to some meeting going on. So, we picked up some groceries and went home for a while.

We had a bit of a chuckle over the young lady that took our admission fees. It was $6.00 per person and she used her calculator to tell us it’s a total of $12.00. Our school system at its’ best. LOL

It really was a pretty comprehensive museum of the early Dakotas and the surrounding states that were part of Dakota before it was split up the way it is now into separate states. It showcased the Indians that lived in the area then as well as early Pioneers. It advanced through the years and had separate rooms for the various peoples that immigrated there. Upstairs they had an art gallery of mostly local artists including Oscar Howe (of the Corn Museum murals). He had some very interesting work.

Outside they had a collection of historical buildings of the era.

It was larger and more impressive than we expected.

Tomorrow, we have a short drive (this last drive to Mitchell was 6 hours, our longest to date) to Yangton which is still in South Dakota, but almost on the Nebraska line.
I'm finally up to date with the blog. It has been great having internet and add to that not having much to see or do it has been great to relax a bit. I'm still not feeling great with this sinus/allergy thing.
