Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens & Bonaventure Cemetery - Savannah, Ga

Monday, we took it easy. We visited the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens and Bonaventure Cemetery.

Not the best time of year to visit the gardens, but it was quite nice to walk around.

The cemetery was interesting though I didn’t realize the statue used in the movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” had been moved to the same museum with the Forrest Gump bench. (there never was a bench there…it was just a prop)

The Bonaventure Cemetery is where we happened to be when the Solar Eclipse was happening. We weren’t in the path to get total darkness, but as it turned out it was cloudy and stormy all day so we couldn’t see anything anyway…..

The most popular gravesite in the historic section is that of little Gracie Watson, the 6-year-old daughter of a popular hotel manager. She died suddenly after being photographed in her new Easter finery.
There were many other interesting grave stones as well. More than 500 grave marker crosses denote the final resting place of Confederate soldiers. The American Legion adjoining the historic section is the final resting place for over 100 of the 1300 veterans buried in Bonaventure.

we thought about our RV..... (it's a Fleetwood....no relation)

We did see where Johnny Mercer was buried. (one of the most popular lyricists of the Great American Songbook era)

He wrote The Glow Worm for the Mills Brothers, Moon River for Judy Garland in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Days of Wine and Roses and many more. The bench has a self caricature engraved on the top of it and titles of many of his songs are engraved all over and around it.

one of the grave sites had a bird feeder

this cemetery was across the street
We also went to check out the Wormsloe Historical Site, but it was closed on Mondays. We did get to peak through the gate to see some of the beautiful Live Oaks with the hanging Spanish moss lining the road to the ruins.

Tomorrow we are headed to Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge.
