Old & New Capitols - Baton Rouge, Louisiana

September 26
We had a pretty laid back day today. We got the oil changed in the car. After that we had lunch at Poor Boy Lloyd’s. Greg had the shrimp po’boy and I had the hot beef in gravy. We split some onion rings. All was good, but not to die for. It was cloudy, but didn't rain today. (welcome change after the deluge yesterday.

We then took in the new capitol building and then walked the grounds. It really is a nice park and grounds around the Capitol. The building itself is quite sterile. It's the tallest Capitol building, but inside other than the view rom the observation deck, not much to see. Just a regular office building.

Huey Long buried here - Governor & US Senator

Huey P. Long is buried on the grounds. He built this building in the middle of the great depression and it sits on 27 acres of manicured gardens and oak trees. Three years later he was assassinated in it.

From there we walked to the Old Capitol which is now a Museum. On the walk to the Old Capitol we stopped at a little place for ice cream and a cold drink.

The rooms aren't restored to represent what they looked like before, but are used for functions. It's an interesting design that looks like a castle on the outside and has a beautiful spiral staircase and "dome". Several rooms of the museum are exhibits of Huey Long. One showed the "pro" ads and the other the "against" ads. Visiting these types of museums helps you realize that politics really haven't changed very much. (not that it's a good thing...lol)

We had planned a second day in Baton Rouge, but honestly not that much there so we will return to New Orleans to indulge in some more great food.
