St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge

October 5

We visited St. Marks earlier this year. It is a beautiful spot. The Lighthouse road is 6.7 miles long with many places to stop along the way. Today we saw a ton of birds, but no Red-cockaded. Many Great Blue Herons, Ibis, Grebes, Egrets (Great, Snowy & Cattle), Red-winged Blackbirds and one Pileated Woodpecker. Lots of Common Gallinules and quite a few ducks.

While Pied-billed Grebes are normally solitary birds, we came across a cluster of them. I guess they are migrating through the area at this time of year. I always think they are really cute little birds.

We also saw 5 Bald Eagles and a couple of Ospreys. We saw one raptor that looked like a Merlin.
