On Friday Oct 13th we returned to the Audubon Center at Biedler Forest for a 2nd
visit.
On the drive there we passed a house really decked out for Halloween. Greg made a U-turn so I could get some photos.
Audubon Center
Last time there was a flurry of birds here. Titmice,
Chickadees, Warblers and lots of woodpeckers. We also spotted a Barred Owl. This
time there weren’t many birds except tons of woodpeckers. Lots of Red-headed,
Red-bellied and some Downy Woodpeckers.

Despite there being so many Woodpeckers they were really hard to get photos of. They all were way up in the trees and we both were getting extreme "bird neck".
I spotted a snake swimming around in the water. It was dark
and he was moving quickly searching for food. We ran into a couple from Utah
that were visiting the East Coast for the first time. She really wanted to see
an alligator, but I doubted it was a good spot to see any. We showed them the
snake and then she showed us some spider photos she hoped we could identify. I
had the same picture from the day before (well the same type of spider anyway),
but I hadn’t had time to look it up yet. As we continued the walk, all of a sudden
we hear this loud unmistakable growl of an alligator. We caught up with them to
let them know what that sound was. It only did it once and then it became a
mission for us trying to find her a gator to see. None to be found…..
Water Moccasin
We saw 3 deer in there this time. First we saw one female
just laying amongst the Cyprus Knees. Then, on the way back to the Visitor’s
Center we saw 2 more females.
a really bad photo of a Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Even though we didn’t see as many birds this time, it was
still a great day out amongst nature. Way less photos this time since I posted
a ton last time. (Aug 28 if you wanted to see those photos)
it's been a long time since I have seen a Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store
We stopped for a quick late lunch and then did some grocery shopping before heading home. (not at the Piggly Wiggly.)
Tomorrow, we are headed back to Santee since we were told there was a guided bird walk at 7:30 in the morning. Having lived in Panama we know Neo-tropical birds pretty well, but all the different Warblers and other birds in the Southeast, not so much. So, it will be great to bird with some experts.
