Green River Oaks Camping Resort – Amboy, Illinois

June 25
 drive to the next park
 bridge over the Illinois River

This is the first park that had different hours of check in and check out times. We couldn’t check in until 3:00 so we got a later start this morning. We drove forever on small roads in between corn & soy bean fields and I was beginning to wonder if we were staying in a corn field.
Finally, we came to the park which is pretty big and spread out. There are a lot of people that must keep their RVs here full time and visit on the weekends or for vacations. Some may live here year-round. It is heavily geared to families with large play grounds and lots of activities only on the weekends for kids.

 the office & general store

Actually, we feel like we are the only people here right now. When we walked around the grounds we saw the Green River and the pool and recreation areas, we did see a couple of other occupied RVs.

The park is on Sleepy Hollow Road. How cute is that?

The office closed right after we arrived. (which is also the general store) We have no cell phone coverage at all here. Since we use our phones as hot spots that sucks. I thought I could catch up on the blog, but that will need to wait until we reach Wisconsin, unless we can find a spot in town tomorrow.
Oddly, this is the 3rd most expensive park we have stayed in and we aren't sure what the appeal is. Since it's summer and people do go on vacation with their kids, no other short term people are here. It was a nice enough park, just a bit weird to feel like you are the only ones there.
They also gave us wrist bands to wear while we are here. We never put them on, not sure who would have checked them. No social life at all going on here. Maybe for the pool had there been other people here. We don't mind the solitude, but not have phone service was a big negative.

It’s supposed to rain tomorrow, so we may just need to chill out tomorrow. There are some great birding areas that we hope to investigate.

H&B Bremer Wildlife Sanctuary – Hillsboro, Illinois

Sunday June 24

Today, we planned to bird in the morning, do some shopping and be home by lunch. We started at the Helen & Betty Bremer Wildlife Sanctuary, which is an Audubon Society site. What a little slice of heaven! There were so many birds you didn’t know where to look first. There were a lot of trails that were mowed areas, some were regular trails and then there was the sticky muddy areas. My hiking shoes were so heavy with mud I could hardly lift my feet.
There are areas for forest, savanna, and grassland birds. The sanctuary is primarily upland oak-hickory forest, which provides habitat for a variety of breeding birds. Old crop fields are being restored to prairie and savanna. Forty acres of grassland has attracted a breeding population of Henslow’s Sparrow. (which we didn’t see)
We did see a new Chickadee today. We have previously only seen the Carolina Chickadee and these were Black-capped Chickadees. There were tons of Indigo Buntings, Red-winged Blackbirds, American Goldfinches, Bluebirds, Robins, three kinds of woodpeckers and we heard a Great Horned Owl screeching at another bird that was screaming back at it.
We ended up spending the whole morning there and never made it to the Shoal Creek Conservation Area.
