Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park, Florida Historic Capitol Museum & New Capitol Building

June 5

We started at the State Park. The gardens didn’t open until 9:00 so we had half an hour to wait so we hiked a bit on the trails. It was much cooler than yesterday, so more comfortable hiking.

The gardens were very nice to walk around and we did hear and see quite a few birds. Mostly Cardinals, Titmice & Wrens. We did see some White-eyed Vireos. The Barclay House was a winter home for Alfred Maclay & his wife Louise Fleischmann (of Fleischmann yeast). Since they planted mostly things that are in bloom in our winter there really weren’t many things in bloom, but it was a lovely setting to walk around and featured a big lake. We had it all to ourselves for a couple of hours before a few people came to visit as well.

We then went in search of Momo’s Pizza. Huge pizzas and we just ordered a slice that was larger than a normal small pizza. Probably a cheap place for the college kids to eat. We enjoyed it.

After lunch we visited the Historic Old Capitol & the new modern one. Both were very interesting to visit.
