Bighorn National Forest, Meadowlark Lake & Tie Hack - Wyoming

Aug 12
*****It is now Aug 21 and hopefully the bad internet is behind us and I can get this blog caught up. We had no phone service in the last park we were in as well...…
Our plan today was to visit a couple of the hiking trails we scoped out on our drive day before yesterday. We drove to the lake again before going to the hiking trails. On the way a Yellow-bellied Marmot ran in front of our car as we were turning into the pullout. He ran across the street and then I saw another one on our side of the road. There were actually 2 on the other side of the road. We weren’t sure what they were, but confirmed it when we got home. We watched them for a long time. Cute little guys!

Yellow-belled Marmot - there were 3 of them

2 of them ran under this rock and you can see one peaking out

We continued on to the Lake pullout and one of the Bull Moose was there again. It didn’t come out of the brush for very good photos this time, but as we watched it a couple with a dog parked down by where it was. The dog was barking and the moose came out of the bushes right in front of them. We are up on the viewpoint and watching it all play out. The guy fumbled for his camera and he surely got “the money shot” as the moose was right there in front of him. The woman was able to keep the dog close to her. Greg got a photo of the action. The moose finally decided to let things go and went back into the brush. We drove down to the site to use the outhouse and the guy couldn’t wait to tell us they saw a moose up close. We said we know, we were up above on the lookout and we had been watching the moose and knew you couldn’t see him in the tall brush. Then a family came with 2 kids and one of them started to run towards the brush and I said watch your children as there is a moose right there in the brush. They thanked me and went down to fish. Greg said he saw the moose cross the road and head up the hill away from everyone.

he stepped out of the brush very close to the couple with a dog

he turned to look at the guy

the moose was super close to them - luckily the dog didn't get loose

We then went to find some hiking trails. We couldn’t find a picnic table so we had lunch in the car. The first place we found actually didn’t go anywhere. (at least not maintained) We think it’s a place for people to ride their ATV’s or snowmobiles.

We went to the next one and it was an interesting hike in the woods. We came to an area that had a lot of cabins. We saw a small flock of birds, but not much else.

The next area was nice, but being a Sunday there were tons of people. We walked to the dam area and then headed home. I wasn’t feeling my best and decided not to hike the trail there.

For some reason the internet has been a bit nicer to me and I have been able to post all the blogs for Cody and now just need to work on the ones from Buffalo.
Tomorrow we plan a low-key day checking out the small town of Buffalo.
