Lake Shawnee – Topeka, Kansas

September 3

We got a later start today waiting for the rain to quit. It did finally subside and the sun came out making for a very nice day to walk around the lake.

From their website “Lake Shawnee was built as a Work Progress Administration project. Construction began in 1935 and was completed on September 3, 1939, when over 5,000 fishermen celebrated the opening day.

Lake Shawnee offers the most surprising recreational opportunities around. More than 1 million users annually enjoy the beauty and diversity of Lake Shawnee.  Lake facilities include The Garden House, Reynolds Lodge, marina, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, open spaces, campground, golf course, shelter houses, playgrounds and water activities of every kind. Special events and recreation programs make it a favorite stop in Northeast Kansas. Lake Shawnee campground is open year round for RV and tent camping.”

We walked around the lake and came to the beautiful gardens. We commented that they were nicer than many we have paid to visit.

We cooked some burgers on the grill for dinner. Yum!
On the news we heard that a sailboat capsized and 3 people had to be rescued on Lake Shawnee. We saw the sailboat in the morning and it must have capsized right after we left. They are all in good condition. It was 17 mile per hour winds and they didn't handle the situation well.

Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy, so we will see what happens.
