Medora Musical - Medora, North Dakota

Evening of July 23
From the South Unit of the Park we then went to Medora the closest town of about 130 people, but gateway to the Park. We stopped at the Farmhouse Cafe and had some really tasty food before returning to see the Medora Musical. The night was beautiful and we had really great seats. Honestly, we didn’t expect much from a “small town” production, but we were very wrong. What a wonderful evening!

As we waited for the show to start, just behind the set we saw 2 guys on horseback on the hills and then saw 2 magnificent Elk. 5 or 10 point bucks depending on where you are from. People in the west tend to only count the points on one side where as in the east they count both sides. No matter how you count them, these boys were huge. The cowboys on the hill were trying to get them to leave the area since the hills are used later in the show. They herded them over the hill. Amazing! I guess that was the “weird place” we would see them as Greg predicted earlier. At first we thought they were fake and part of the show, until we saw them move.

The first act was the singers and dancers performing. They spoofed many different game shows and the winner was the one that sang the song.

Then, they had an intermission. The second act was very good. They had a feature act called Fly Crew that is a team of jump ropers that were runners up on America’s Got Talent and have appeared on Ellen. They have performed all over the world and gave an amazing performance.

Then, the singers and dancers came back out and they did a patriotic salute to all branches of the service. Then, did a tribute to Theodore Roosevelt that was very moving. Showing the Rough Riders victorious in Cuba at San Juan Hill. The finale had the cowboys on horses up on the hills behind the stage (where they herded the Elk away) and the cast sang Ghost Riders in the Sky as each cowboy rode up and lined up on the hill. Then, they turned out all the lights and the were just silhouettes and ended with fireworks.

It was really late when it ended and we had the half hour drive home. It was a long day since we were up at 5:30 and went to bed around 11:30.
Tomorrow we planned to sleep in and then would drive the Enchanted Highway and visit the Museum Complex in Dickinson where we are staying.
